Haiti faces an escalating security crisis, as widespread armed gang violence continues to disrupt daily life, forcing many to abandon their homes. The situation extends beyond Port-au-Prince, now with numerous “lost” territories, reaching the Artibonite region where gang violence wreaks havoc, as in the recent tragic attack in Pont-Sondé that claimed over 100 lives.
Communities that were already vulnerable are now effectively abandoned, left without recourse by a state unable to stem the violence or protect its citizens. Haitians recognize they are on their own; while change won’t happen overnight, many are determined to organize and adapt, seeking tools and the knowledge to use them effectively in this challenging time.
“I heard about AlerteUnité from a friend who was testing the application. When she mentioned I could send SOS alerts to my chosen contacts, I couldn’t wait to learn more,” shared Ann, a Port-au-Prince resident navigating daily life amidst the unrest.
AlerteUnité is a mobile app designed to empower Haitians by enabling instant SOS alerts and incident reporting, fostering a community of resilience. Inspired by Haiti’s national motto, L’union fait la force—unity makes strength, AlerteUnité equips individuals with life-saving communication tools in times of crisis.
On signing up, users add up to five trusted emergency contacts, who will receive their SOS alerts. These should be people users trust completely with their lives, for in moments of danger, every second counts.
“I added my closest contacts and tested the SOS feature,” Ann described. “In seconds, my contacts received the alert both through the app and via WhatsApp—and my location was shared simultaneously. Sending an SOS alone is vital, but having my precise location included? That’s a life-saver!” With just a two-second hold of the red SOS button, users activate the emergency alert. A message box allows for additional information, and photos can be attached to provide greater context to the emergency. The SOS function covers medical crises (e.g., heart attacks, accidents) and personal safety threats (e.g., feeling unsafe, assault, domestic violence). Given Haiti’s susceptibility to natural disasters, the app also supports alerts for earthquakes, floods, and extreme weather.
“These features are invaluable,” Ann added. “Violence can flare up unexpectedly, catching us off guard. Tools like this mean critical information reaches loved ones quickly and could be the difference between life and death.”
AlerteUnité takes a vital step in building solidarity among Haitian communities amid an unprecedented crisis—small yet meaningful progress.
AlerteUnité reflects a community that cares. 💙
